The Chicks have hatched!!!!

We have had a" great day " here (as the girls pit it). Some of our homeschool friends have a large flock of Guinea Hens and they have been incubating 70 eggs. This morning the eggs began to hatch! Our friends called us and we came over in time to see 2 little chicks crack open the shells and (30 minutes later) they emerged. Amber and Abby had never witnessed the "hatching" of chicks before, so this was great fun. Being a homeschool day I entered this in the log as a science field trip. The girls learned about life and death -one hatched before he absorbed the blood from the egg membrane and he died soon after. We discussed why we wash our hands after handling eggs -Salmonella and GERMS. We talked about the life cycle of chickens and why we call some Drakes and Some hens. All in all it was an outstanding "field trip."
After watching the chicks for a good long time, the children went out for 4-wheeler rides. Anna was too young so we put her in a wagon to create a baby-safe version of a 4-wheeler. It was very hot outside at 100*. When it was time to go, the girls were worn out but so thankful that they could go see the chicks hatch. Homeschooling can be so fun sometimes!
